The Cleansing of the Heart and the Treasure of Divine Love

Address by Hazrat Pir Sahib (May Allah have mercy upon him)

Date: 23 January 1986

Address No. 41

All praise is for Allah.

Countless thanks to Allah Almighty, the Master of the Kingdom, Who has once again granted us the opportunity and the ability to gather here for His pleasure, in His remembrance and in His love. Millions and billions of blessings and salutations upon the Leader of the Prophets, the Beloved of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH), through whose blessed grace this favour has been bestowed upon us.

Respected listeners! We shall begin the sacred devotional recitations according to our usual practice. Before doing so, it is necessary to understand one or two things.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) has stated that Hazrat Musa (AS) presented himself before Allah and said, “O Allah! Let me have the vision of Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH).”

Allah said, “This is not possible. However, I shall let you hear the voice of the Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH).”

Then Allah called out, “O Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH)!”

All the souls who were destined to belong to the Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH) responded from the backs of their fathers and the wombs of their mothers:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

“We are present, O our Lord! You have no partner. We are present. All praise belongs to You, all blessings are from You, and all sovereignty belongs to You. You have no partner.”

Allah then said, “O Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH)! My mercy has overcome My wrath, and My forgiveness has overcome My punishment. I have given to you before you asked, and I have accepted your supplication before you supplicated. I have forgiven you before you committed your sins. Whoever appears before Me on the Day of Judgment in a state that he has not associated anyone with Allah and believes Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) to be the final Prophet of Allah, all his sins will be forgiven.”

Respected members of the gathering! This mercy and kindness is through the blessed person of that Pure Prophet (PBUH), who is our Master, our Lord and our means of attaining Divine grace. By establishing a connection with him and entering into his servitude, the happiness and success of both worlds can be attained.

But unfortunately, today there are people who, despite possessing knowledge, fulfil the apparent requirements of the commandments of Islam and follow its various teachings, yet have been deprived of this precious and incomparable supreme blessing. They make the blessed status and rank of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) itself a subject of debate. They regard diminishing the exalted status of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) as a declaration of their devotion to Divine Unity, and they consider expressing the honour and exalted rank of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), or believing in it, to be associating partners with Allah.

They offer prayers and even lead others in prayer. They preach and give advice. They act upon the commandments and prohibitions of Islam. Yet they are completely detached from the spirit of Islam.

The reason is that, as I explained previously, when a stain appears on the heart because of a mistake, that stain begins to grow until eventually the entire heart becomes darkened. Consequently, a person becomes deprived of that Divine love which is the treasure of the heart and which is attained through the blessed spiritual connection with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).

The purpose of reciting these sacred devotional litanies is that, through these recitations and through seeking forgiveness, we cleanse our hearts so that the love of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)—which is, in essence, the love of Allah—may be reflected within them.

In this way, we can become true Muslims and attain the greatest wealth that exists in this world.

Do you know what that wealth is?

It is peace and contentment of the heart.

History bears witness that this peace of heart has never been attained merely by accumulating wealth. No one has attained it merely by accumulating property, nor has anyone attained it merely by conquering countries. Rather, the greatest landowner and the greatest king have often been found to be the most troubled and anxious, completely deprived of peace of heart.

Allah Almighty has clearly stated:

اَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَـطْمَىِٕنُّ الْقُلُوْبُ

(Surah Al-Ra’d, 13:28)

“Surely, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find peace.”

Through these sacred devotional recitations, peace and contentment of the heart are attained.

And then, respected members of the gathering, a time will come when we shall be presented before Allah. At that time, every person will be in such anxiety that even children will become old from grief, and the eyes will be wide open with fear, as though they were intoxicated and unconscious.

Even at such a time, only those will remain secure who have purified their hearts through the remembrance of Allah, and who have transformed their hearts into treasures of the love of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and the love of Allah. They will possess pure hearts with which they will present themselves before Allah.

Allah says:

(Surah Ash-Shu’ara, 26:88–89)

“On the Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit, except for the one who comes before Allah with a sound and pure heart.”

It becomes clear, therefore, that these sacred devotional recitations are the means and the true wealth through which we can attain goodness and success in this world and in the Hereafter.

The struggle and effort that a person makes for wealth and children becomes a cause of grief and anxiety even in this world, and in the Hereafter it can become a source of shame, regret and sorrow.

Therefore, O respected members of the gathering! When the time comes for such a blessed gathering, if Satan and the lower self tempt you towards worldly wealth and children, then immediately struggle against them and leave everything behind in order to participate in this gathering. There is salvation in attending it.

And recite these sacred litanies with full attention, lest you make the effort to come here, but Satan then misleads you and turns your attention towards something else.

While performing these sacred recitations, keep your attention directed towards Allah and remain a seeker of the blessed spiritual connection with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), so that you may become enriched here and return as true servants of Allah.

Now let us begin.
