Divine Passion and the Remembrance of Allah

Address of Huzoor Wala Shan Pir Sahib (23 February 1985)

Speech no. 5

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is for Allah.

Countless thanks be to Allah, the Lord of Majesty and Glory, the Master of all sovereignty, who once again granted us the opportunity and blessing to gather here for His pleasure, in His remembrance, and in His love. Millions and millions of blessings and peace be upon the Leader of the Prophets, the Beloved of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), through whose mediation this grace has been bestowed upon us.

Respected listeners! How great is the kindness of our Gentle and Generous Lord. While people are passing their time in markets and cities—some engaged in leisure, others occupied with the temporary needs of this fleeting world—we have left everything, sacrificed all, and sit here carefree in the remembrance of our Lord.

The people of the world call us mad, but the Master of the Day of Judgment and His angels call us Faizoon—the successful ones, those who have attained their goal. Those who consider themselves wise are busy in deeds that last only minutes, hours, days, or a few years, and the angels are recording their actions for accountability.

Allah says in Surah Al-Kahf (verses 103–104):

“Those whose efforts have been wasted in worldly life while they think that they are doing good.”

They believe they are engaged in valuable work, yet they are merely exhausting themselves in temporary pursuits. In contrast, they consider us idle, but the reality is that angels spread their wings above our heads and Allah’s mercy rains upon us. The pleasures and comforts of this world are being sacrificed for us, and preparations are being made for an everlasting life that will never end. Those who gather in this assembly come walking upon the wings of angels and will return to their homes in the same blessed manner.

Respected listeners! If one looks with the eye of truth and consults history, it becomes clear that we are possessed by the passion of the Lord—and that is the true path—while they are possessed by the passion of the world. The value of this sacred passion can only be understood by the one upon whom Allah bestows His grace, whose heart is pure and illuminated with divine light. How can darkened hearts comprehend it?

After striving through all the struggles of the world, when Allama Iqbal understood the reality of this passion, he prayed:

Grant me the inner burning of my forefathers,

Make me among the company of those who do not grieve.

I have untangled the knots of intellect,

O my Lord, make me one endowed with Divine passion.

Be grateful to Allah that He has granted this passion. Pray that we appear before Him carrying this very passion, and that no thief snatches this precious treasure from us.

Come, let us remember our Lord together with such sincerity and devotion that if there remains in any corner of our hearts love for the world, it may be removed by His blessed names. And if any part of the heart is empty of this Divine passion, may it be filled completely with it.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Aurad-e-Nazriya Sharif was recited, followed by supplication.
