Discourse # 68

The Almighty Allah be praised that the Master of All Sovereignty once again granted us today the opportunity to gather in His remembrance and pleasure. Millions and billions of blessings and salutations upon the Leader of the Prophets, the Beloved of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, peace and blessings be upon him, through whom this grace has been granted.

Respected audience! Allah Almighty has said in the Holy Qur’an:

Translation:

“Whoever among you commits a sin out of ignorance, then repents after it and reforms himself, then indeed, Allah Almighty is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Sure. This is something truly worth understanding: whoever commits a sin, and whatever the sin may be, commits it only out of ignorance. What greater ignorance could there be than for a person to do something that causes his own harm, displeases his most merciful and generous master, and deprives him of the everlasting blessings of his Lord? Only a person whose selfish motives, desires, and lack of knowledge have cast a veil over his eyes can do this, becoming completely ignorant. So, if someone is led astray by the prompting of the lower self and Satan and makes a mistake, he should not think that God has now become displeased with him forever, that no way to forgiveness remains, and that he is bound for Hell. No, never. God Almighty is exceedingly merciful and kind. To save His servant and enrich him with blessings both religious and worldly, He provides guidance. Even if someone errs despite guidance and then feels remorse for it, mercy is present for him. It embraces him, covers his sins, and makes him a servant of God. God says in a Hadith-e-Qudsi: Whoever does one good deed receives the reward of ten good deeds, and whoever commits one sin receives punishment equal to only one sin, or I may forgive him. And if someone comes to Me with sins enough to fill the whole earth, but seeks My forgiveness, I will meet him with that much forgiveness. And whoever draws nearer to Me by a hand’s span, I draw nearer to him by a cubit; and whoever draws nearer to Me by a cubit, I draw nearer to him by a fathom (A fathom is the span of both arms outstretched). And whoever comes to Me running, I come to him at speed.

Alright, here we go. Respected listeners! After hearing this blessed verse and blessed Hadith, it is necessary that two things become clear. First, no matter how sinful a person may be, he should never lose hope in the mercy of God, but should turn towards God with faith and hope. Second, no matter how shameless or how lowly a person may be, when he sees such immense kindness from his Master and Creator, even though God needs no one and has no need at all, yet He is so gracious to His helpless servant that He created him, blessed him with countless favors, and granted him guidance, then immediately the humanity within that person is stirred. He becomes ashamed of what he has done, and every vein in his body turns in repentance before his Lord, gives thanks to Him, and devotes every last bit of his life to obeying His command.

Today, we have gathered before this very same Merciful One, our eyes lowered in shame, acknowledging our heedlessness and holding out our hands for forgiveness. Invoking these blessed names, we shall plead: “O Master! Make us Your servants and grant us forgiveness. Purify us and forgive us.” Now, let us begin.
